Day Four
September 1, 1999
Denver, CO to Kansas City, KS
The Northern California segment and the Pacific Northwest segment of the NCM 99 Caravan to Bowling Green, Kentucky continued from the Aurora Holiday Inn outside Denver to Kansas City, KS.

One of the first morning activities was pulling the floor mats to drain some of the water from last night's thunderstorms coming in to Denver. We had some heavy rain from Ft. Collins until we got to the hotel last night, and passengers and floors got pretty wet.

Here's Team ZR-1 teammates Lexie (left), Bill (right) and I (center) before the drivers meeting.

I guess I'm famous now. A local TV station had a crew out filming, and MuttVette and I made our appearance at least on videotape.

Here's our caravan leaders at our usual morning driver's meeting.prior to departure for the day. Today would include lunch at Clay Chevrolet in Hays, Kansas, and a free night in Kansas City.

Joining us today was this nice 58 roadster from Colorado. It did pretty well on the run to Hays, KS, actually beating us there. It's cruising at 70 or so in this shot. He's running stock suspension, but a ZZ4 crate motor.

Jerry says I'm not taking enough pictures of him. Here he is behind the wheel on I70 between Colorado and Kansas. From the speedo it looks like we're cruising at around 80.

Corvettes as far as you can see. At one point I got playing with a couple of Grand Sports at about a buck, and Mr. Valentine told me to knock it off. Turns out that the officer was already occupied with a minivan that had been passing us and travelling at way too fast a speed. Glad we didn't make the Minivan's day.
Lunch was at Clay Chevrolet. The lines for the burgers were far too long, so we went to the mall to grab some food. MuttVette again attracted more than it's share of attention again, but at this point there's only three cars representing the first two generations. We've got the Colorado 58, the Idaho 66, and MuttVette, the California 61. After driving 300 miles, we kinda forgot to take pictures there, but lots of Corvettes made it to the lunch, some with wallets slightly depleted after highway patrol encounters.

Did I say there was law enforcement patroling I70 in Kansas? That little box in the center of my windshield has paid for itself on this trip.

We probably had radar bounce off us by 20 or more different officers in Kansas. We have no idea why Dorothy wanted to go home to Kansas. Some were nice enough to have it on solid to give us lots of warning. Others we saw visually, then heard radar. We even had an officer pace us for 17 miles, then set up a trap just west of an interchange that we got off at to get fuel, then move a mile east of the interchange. We heard of at least five tickets in the caravan today, a solo Grand Sport, and a group ticket to four Washington State Corvette members.
Brett and Lexie have been Caravaning with us for the better part of the last four days. At any point of time there's one of these two formations on the road.

Here's the view from MuttVette's rear view mirror at times.

At other times, UBEAUTY is in the lead.

Stopped after a toll plaza to let Brett and Lexie catch up and call to see where our hotel for the night was. Found this interesting pattern in the sand under my exhaust after coming back to the car.
