After spending nearly a year in the pursuit of 1000 hp, I finally made it back to the Sacramento drag strip 5/30/03 for the first shakedown passes with the new Vortech ys-trim blower. The tech inspector told me not to run faster than 10.0 until I have a rollcage in the car and SFI pants on my person. Not wanting to get thrown out after the first pass, I walked away from the starting line in 1st and 2nd, then hammered it in 3rd, which resulted in a 10.60 at 142. New best mph - this is looking good! I used a bit more throttle launching run #2, but still way short of max effort. This netted the new best run of 9.82 at 145. Also a lot of oil smoke, as seen below (pix courtesy of Dave Mills).
Alan Blaine (Blaine Fabrication) helped me re-do the valve cover gaskets in the pits after the pass in an effort to keep more oil inside the engine, but the next (and final) run produced even more smoke. The post-mortem revealed a seriously-leaky oil pan gasket, so I got to perform the on-car pan gasket swap. I think this qualifies as my least favorite task.
Changes since previous best in red.
