Search for traction, 28x13.5x15 ET Streets
When the car was mildly modified, the 305/40-16 M&H DOT stickies provided plenty of traction. Installing the blower overwhelmed them, though, so after reading the rags and monitoring 'net traffic for the Hot Setup, I ordered a pair of 26x11.5x15 ET Streets and mounted them on 15x10 Weld DragLites with a 7.5" backspacing. Because the wheelwells had already been massaged for 315/35-17 BFG Comp T/A street tires, the 26" ET Streets fit fine. The Welds required some brake caliper fin grinding, however.
Local Bay Area f-bud' Jody Shapiro has a good page on making 315's on 17x11 ZR1 wheels (GS offset) fit. My wheelwells were modified by the same guy, on the same day, as Jody's, and we have the same wheel/tire setup. Click here to visit. I also chose to slice away the bump stop and weld a flat plate over the exposed metal edges. The main advantage is being able to bolt on the big meats with the rear axle at full droop. The lack of bumpstops has not caused any rubbage problems.
As the car's performance passed through the low 12's and into the 11's at the strip, traction became scarce once again. Watching this movie, digitized by Jody (thx!) caused me to realize how much wheel spin I was getting. Click here (7 meg!) to watch it. After some careful thinking and measuring, I decided to replace the 26" tires with 28x13.5x15 ET Streets, to be mounted on the same Welds.
Some delicate reshaping with a 2 lb sledge was required to get them to quit rubbing on the inner wheelwells. Also, some surgical slicing of the trailing edge of the outer fender was required because the big meats grew enough in diameter at 120+ to rub. Finally, I swapped my Hotchkis LCAs for a pair of small diameter, chrome moly bars from BMR. The BMR LCA's also use a narrower-than-stock poly bushing, which enabled me to offset the arms inboard as shown below.
The next three pix compare the 28" stickies to my BFG street rubber. The left hand pic shows the ET Street standing next to 315 and 275 Comp T/A's. The middle pic clearly shows how wide these suckers are. The other tire is a 315. The last pic compares the old 26" with the new 28" tire. How well do they stick? The pix at the top of Boom #3 show my first ever wheelstand (admittedly a pretty weak wheelie, but I'll take it!). For a DOT legal tire, they stick quite well.
The last 3 pix on this page show the tires mounted on the 15x10 Welds and installed on the car. This is with stock rear springs. The 1LE front springs and Bilsteins lowered the front by about an inch.
