Boom #1, the 10-bolt lets go
Intro Boom #1 Boom #2 Boom #3 Boom #4 Boom #? Boom #6 Boom #7 Boom #8 Boom #9 Boom #10
The car has broken at the strip 3 times so far, each one requiring a tow truck ride. The first time, it was an axle and one of the spider gears in the original 10-bolt that let go. This page summarizes the damage done. The three pix below are of the axle stub that was stuck in the carrier. Much pounding was required to extract it. Click thumbnails to see more detail.
The 2 pix below show the broken spider gear in the carrier. Note the spider gear tooth wedged between the carrier and the ring gear in the pic on the left (1/3 up from bottom of pic, in the center). It's kinda hard to see, but the broken spider gear is visible in the right-hand pic through the window in the housing. Funny thing about all this is that I had told the gang that I was headed to the strip that day to grenade the rearend. Wish I could create a 10 second time slip that easily.
The last 2 pix show the rest of the rear axle.
