1998 Camaro Z28
Last Update: 5/28/00 About the Car: I bought this car on March 24, 1998. Previously, I had a 1995 Camaro Z28 which had the 4sp automatic transmission. What I really wanted was a the 6 speed manual transmission, as I was feeling that the automatic was taking all the fun out of driving the car. Around November 1997, I started hearing some stories on the internet about how much quicker the 1998 Camaros were with the new LS1 engine than then LT1 engine that was in the 1993 - 1997 cars. To make a long story short, after 6 weeks of serious searching, I found the exact car I was looking for and I owe it all to my girlfriend, Jane, who mentioned one evening "You know, I don't know what this new car you want even looks like". As luck would have it, we were driving right by a Chevrolet dealer, who happend to have the exact car I was looking for.The rest, as they say, is history. What do I do with this car? I did not have any real plans in terms of what I wanted to "DO" with the 1998 Camaro when I first got it. Within the first week, the Borla exhaust off of the 1995 was installed, a B&M Ripper shifter and CAGS was disabled a couple of weeks later. To see a complete list of what I've done to the car, check out the Mods section. In April of 1998, a fellow So Cal list member, Jason Swindle introduced me Solo II / Autocross. Since then, everything that I've done to this car has been towards improving it as an Autocross car, which is why most of the modifications to the car have been focused around the suspension, and not the engine's power output. In Autocross, engine power is not anywhere near as important as suspension, tires and most importantly, driver. In the short 15 months that I've had this car, I have done more fun stuff in it than I have in any other car I've owned. The two highlights of that have to be the F-body Gathering in Las Vegas in October of 1998, and OpenTrack's February event at Buttonwillow Race Park. - Nick |
